President Trump is headed to the United Nations General Assembly next week determined to make progress on North Korea, Iran and other hot spots, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said Friday.
The president and the entire U.S. delegation to the annual gathering of world leaders in New York were not going for a photo op, she said.
“No one is going to grip and grin. The United States is going to work,” Mrs. Haley said at a White House press briefing.
The U.N. recently imposed tough economic sanctions on North Korea, with support from China and Russia, which previously have protected the rogue regime.
But dictator Kim Jong Un continues to pursue nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, including a missile test Thursday.
White House National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said there is a new worldwide consensus about the need to confront Pyongyang. And he said the U.N. General Assembly will be an opportunity to build international cooperation.
Mr. Trump has threatened to use military options but continues to seek a resolution using diplomatic and economic pressure.
“We will call on all nations, call on everyone to do everything we can short of war,” said Mr. McMaster. “This is not an issue between the United States and North Korea. This is an issues between the world and North Korea.”
