Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity took to Twitter late Wednesday to blame Republican lawmakers if President Trump commits “political suicide” on immigration policy.
The realization that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer may cause the president to alter campaign promises regarding illegal immigrants prompted a flurry of tweets from Mr. Hannity near midnight. The Fox host told his 2.83 million followers that Mr. Trump was pushed into negotiations with Democrats due to feckless Republicans.
“Politicians are supposed to keep their word. R’s failed on Healthcare, broke their word. They have failed! @POTUS needs to keep his promises,” Mr. Hannity began a series of tweets. “And if @POTUS doesn’t keep that promise, and goes for amnesty, it will be the political equivalent or ’read my lips, no new taxes.’ […] I support the AGENDA.”
Supporters of Mr. Trump fear that his vow to build a giant wall along the southern U.S. border may never happen.
The president is also working with Democrats to ensure that nearly 800,000 children of illegal immigrants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, are not deported.
“Weak R’s have betrayed voters. @POTUS needs to stay the course and keep his promises or it’s over! Pelosi and Schumer can never be trusted,” Mr. Hannity continued. […] If reports true 100%. I blame R’s. They caused this. They wanted him to fail and now pushed him into arms of political suicide — IF TRUE.”
Mr. Trump told reporters on Thursday that he was “fairly close” to a deal with Democrats, provided he obtains resources for “massive border security.”
