Public officials and university leaders have dedicated a new technology-oriented graduate school in New York City.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday’s official opening of the school called Cornell Tech shows New York “will be forever the global center of technology and innovation.”

The school on Roosevelt Island is a collaboration between Cornell University and Israel’s Technion. They won a competition to build a high-tech graduate school initiated by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2011.

Bloomberg called the opening of the new campus “an amazing milestone.”

He said the best inheritance he can leave for his daughters and grandchildren is “a better city and a better world.”

A new graduate school that backers hope will boost New York’s status as a center of high-tech innovation is opening.

The school is called Cornell Tech and is the product of a competition independent former Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced in 2011.

The winner was a joint application by Cornell University and the Technion in Israel. Their collaboration is opening on Roosevelt Island on Wednesday.

Cornell Tech awards graduate degrees in fields including engineering and computer science.

The main academic building is called the Bloomberg Center. Faculty members share an open-plan work space with researchers and others.

A building called the Bridge is owned by developer Forest City Ratner and will house university programs and commercial tenants.

There also is a 26-story residence hall with sweeping views.
