BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for his role in the shooting and stabbing death of a 22-year-old man.

The Cape Cod Times reports that 28-year-old Sonny Tavares was sentenced Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to second degree murder, armed and masked robbery and home invasion, among other charges.

Prosecutors say Tavares and Amonty Amado went to a Bourne motel in April 2014 to rob Antone Gutierrez of drugs and money. Prosecutors say Tavares shot Gutierrez and Amado stabbed him.

Tavares’ attorney says he believes his client will see freedom in the future.

Amado pleaded guilty to manslaughter Aug. 17, and has been sentenced to a maximum of 15 years and one day in prison.
