PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A standoff between a man and police that allegedly involved gunshots has ended peacefully.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that the man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning in Portsmouth and faces multiple charges. He was not identified.

Police said the standoff began Monday night after officers arrived at the home for an unstated reason. Officers briefly spoke with the man before he retreated into the house and barricaded himself inside.

Police spokeswoman Misty Holley said the man fired shots but no one was injured. Neighboring residents were told to take cover. Some were taken to a bus for their safety.
