MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A Democratic assistant district attorney is challenging first-term Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher for a northeast Wisconsin congressional seat.

Beau Liegeois (LEE-Joyce) of Allouez launched his candidacy for the 8th Congressional District seat on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Liegeois is an assistant district attorney in Brown County where he focuses on prosecuting drug crimes. He is also a captain in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, serving as a judge advocate. Liegeois is a native of the Green Bay area.

Gallagher was elected to the seat in November, replacing retiring Republican Rep. Reid Ribble. Gallagher is a former U.S. Marine who intends to seek re-election next year.

His spokeswoman Madison Wiberg said Gallagher had no comment and there will be plenty of time later to campaign.

The election is over a year away in November 2018.
