Jim Carrey left an E! News reporter scratching her head after giving a bizarre, existential rant on the red carpet at Harper’s Bazaar’s “Icons” party in New York City Friday night.
Mr. Carrey started the interview by circling around Catt Sadler and insisting he was only at the event to be part of something completely inconsequential.
“There’s no meaning to any of this,” the actor said. “So I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join and here I am. I mean, you gotta admit, it’s pretty meaningless.
“Celebrating icons, boy, that is the absolute lowest aiming possibility that we could come up with,” he added.
Mr. Carrey then broke out a James Brown impression. Ms. Sadler looked at the camera several times in disbelief.
“I don’t believe in icons,” the actor continued. “I don’t believe in personalities.
“I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red ’S’ that you wear on your chest, that makes bullets bounce off,” he said, paraphrasing a commencement speech he gave Maharishi University of Management in Iowa in 2014, E! reported.
“I believe we’re a field of energy dancing for itself. And, I don’t care,” Mr. Carrey said. “There is no me. There’s just things happening, and there are clusters of tetrahedrons moving around together. … It’s not our world. We don’t matter. There’s the good news.”
Earlier Friday, it was announced that Mr. Carrey’s Showtime series “I’m Dying Up Here,” in which he serves as executive producer, was picked up for a second season, E! reported.
