DETROIT (AP) - A nonprofit that prepares girls for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is starting a chapter in Detroit.
A meet and greet is planned Wednesday at the Michigan Science Center for Black Girls CODE. General Motors is partnering with the San Francisco-based organization that was founded in 2011.
Black Girls CODE says it hopes to train one million girls for STEM careers by 2040. It offers computer coding classes, workshops and other educational opportunities for girls ages 7 to 17. Girls in the program also learn how to build websites and create mobile apps.
The Detroit chapter will be the 13th in the United States. There also is a Black Girls CODE chapter in Johannesburg, South Africa. Black Girls CODE has worked with 8,000 girls since being founded.
