Let us recall when Western parliamentarians eulogized ’democracy’ advocate and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. This was, after all, the lady who when asked about Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya people, claimed they were interlopers.

It was predictable, then, that once Aung San Suu Kyi gained power she would pander to Myanmar’s Buddhist majority. Her house arrest, long though it was, pales into insignificance compared to the plight of many of her fellow countrymen, who have been rendered homeless by the continuing violence.

Fetishizing democracy is folly. All too often democracies have resorted to rendition, torture, cyber warfare, assassination, terrorism and war. We’ve got to start practicing what we preach.
