The Washington Wizards made two roster changes Monday. One they decided on their own. The other was forced upon them by injury.

The Wizards waived center Daniel Ochefu, who did not have a guaranteed contract. Ochefu was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He was an odd fit on a roster with two true other centers in a league that was moving away from the big, powerful man-in-the-middle type.

The other change came from second-year shooting guard Sheldon Mac. Mac reportedly tore his Achilles tendon Sunday night in the Wizards’ preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Monday, Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters Mac would have surgery Tuesday and is likely out for the season.

Mac was an intriguing young shooting guard who was also signed in 2016 as an undrafted free agent.

The moves provide the Wizards with two open slots on their roster. They have an option of filling one with an in-house player, such as Donald Sloan, who was invited to be part of preseason camp. They can also wait to see which players are waived by other teams as the preseason moves along.

Washington opens the season at home on Oct. 18 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers.
