Mike Huckabee’s new TV show launched this weekend on TBN. Mr. Huckabee brought a high level of energy and fulfilled his promise to both inform and entertain the audience — intermingling tax policy analysis with a segment about Pietown, Arizona. And Mr. Huckabee kickstarted the show with a lively interview he had taped with President Trump in the White House.
Mr. Huckabee will record his show before a live audience in a gorgeous, newly remodeled studio in Nashville, Tennessee. He could have chosen a studio in Los Angeles, New York, or even down in Florida close to his home. But he chose Nashville as a reflection of his statement: “There’s a lot of America between the coasts.” Also, Nashville allows him to scratch his lifelong itch of performing live music alongside famous bands and singers.
Saturday’s musical guest was Chuck Negron, who belted out “Joy to the World” and “One is the Loneliest Number” as though singing them for the first time. Mr. Negron, a founder of the hit band “Three Dog Night,” also sat for an interview with Mr. Huckabee. He talked about his long-time struggle with drug addiction and how he finally came clean and has stayed sober for twenty-six years.
I took a couple of my teen sons to the taping, and we all agreed that the show struck just the right balance of elements — humor, music, policy talk, live interview — it was all professionally put together at the highest level.
True, we’re already fans and friends of the governor — I’ll admit my bias here. But any objective critique of the program should give credit where credit is due. Mr. Huckabee first pulled together TV programs like this as a pastor in the early 1980s, and his experience in the medium shows.
