CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - The leader of Colorado Public Radio for nearly 40 years is stepping down.

President Max Wycisk (WHY’-zick) announced Friday that he will retire June 30. He worked as an on-air announcer and program director at CPR’s flagship station when it was connected with the University of Denver before becoming president in 1978.

Under his leadership, the station become a fully independent non-profit and was transformed from a single-signal radio station to a statewide network broadcast on 34 signals.

Wycisk has served on the board of National Public Radio twice. He received the William H. Kling Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Public Radio International in 1996.

CPR will conduct a nationwide search for a successor.
