AURORA, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner says he doubts the state can afford to help pay for infrastructure work around the proposed Obama Presidential Center.
Rauner said Thursday in Aurora he supports the center in Chicago and the investment of more money in infrastructure. But he said the state faces deep financial constraints even though lawmakers put in place a budget and tax hike.
Rauner contends the state’s budget plan is $1.7 billion out of balance.
Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago says he and House Speaker Michael Madigan brought up using tax funds to help reconfigure roads around the center during recent meetings with Republican leaders.
Cullerton says the state could use some of the money set aside for road projects to help pay for infrastructure work at the Obama center site.
