SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake City Council is declaring that Columbus Day will also be Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Chairman Stan Penfold said Tuesday that Utah’s capital will still recognize Columbus Day on the second Monday in October, but acknowledging both days will strengthen understanding of many contributions to the fabric of the nation.

The council unanimously approved the idea.

The Utah League of Native American Voters says 26 U.S. cities recognize the day. The group cheered the declaration. Co-founder Moroni Benally says it’s a symbolic change that recognizes the history and sacrifices made by the original inhabitants of the area.

The Italian American Civic League of Utah protested change, saying Columbus Day recognizes their culture.
