PITTSBURGH (AP) - A federal court jury returns Thursday to continue deliberations in the civil rights lawsuit filed by a black motorist paralyzed by a white Pittsburgh police officer during a traffic stop.
Twenty-four-year-old Leon Ford is suing Officers David Derbish and Anthony Miller for the November 2012 traffic stop that saw Derbish shoot Ford five times. Miller’s being sued for assault and battery.
Ford alleges that the officers mistook him for a gang member with a similar name, age and appearance and treated him aggressively.
The officers contend that Ford resisted when they tried to pull him out of the car to frisk him and that Derbish fired only because Ford drove away with Derbish kneeling and struggling with Ford in the car. Ford said the car was inadvertently knocked into gear.
