CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - An African-American history museum in South Carolina set to be built on the site where nearly half the slaves first arrived in North America has received a $10 million grant.
Lilly Endowment Inc. announced Tuesday it’s giving $10 million to the proposed International African American Museum in Charleston.
Museum President Michael Moore says $5 million will go to design and build the museum, $4 million will go toward creating an endowment and the rest will go toward exhibits and connecting with churches and faith groups.
Museum officials say they are now about $9 million away from their fundraising goal.
Moore says he wants to break ground on the museum in 2018 and open it in 2020.
The museum will tell the story of slaves and have an extensive genealogy archive.
