PERRIS, Calif. (AP) - A state park news release says authorities are searching for a California man who had difficulty swimming before he disappeared underwater in Lake Perris State Recreation Area.

The Press-Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/2xO8inH ) State Park Superintendent III John Rowe said in the release that Steven Ly, of Rosemead, was last seen Monday at noon while swimming from a pontoon rental boat with his girlfriend.

Ly began to panic and his girlfriend struggled when he tried to grab her before he went under. She made it to the boat and flagged down an angler to report a possible drowning.

State park rangers used their boat and scuba dive team and help from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Neither Ly nor his girlfriend wore life jackets.
