AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage says he is nominating acting Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Ricker Hamilton to be commissioner.

Hamilton has served as acting commissioner since June 2017 when former commissioner Mary Mayhew stepped down to run in the Republican primary for governor. LePage is prevented from running again due to term limits.

Hamilton will next appear before the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee for a confirmation hearing. The Senate could take up the committee’s recommendation at an Oct. 23 special session.

LePage said Hamilton will continue to bring fiscal responsibility and accountability to this department.

Hamilton has managed child and aging services as well as Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center and Riverview Psychiatric Center.
