BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Symphony Orchestra is prepping for its first Japan tour with Andris Nelsons as music director.
The BSO last toured Japan with a music director in 1999, when Seiji Ozawa led the orchestra. It visited the country in 2014 with a guest conductor, Charles Dutoit.
The symphony leaves Tuesday and the tour kicks off Nov. 3 in Nagoya. The BSO also will perform selections from Rachmaninoff, Mahler, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Mozart in Osaka on Nov. 4 and in Kawasaki on Nov. 5 before a three-night appearance in Tokyo from Nov. 7-9.
Nelsons led the orchestra on two other international tours in 2015 and 2016 - both to Europe.
Nelsons called the Japan tour “an extraordinary honor.” He said he’s also looking forward to feasting on sushi, his favorite food.
