CHICAGO (AP) - The former police chief of the Chicago suburb of Hometown has pleaded guilty to stealing $65,000 in cash tow fees that motorists paid over eight years.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Charles Forsyth was sentenced Monday to four years of probation after pleading guilty to one count of felony theft as part of a plea deal with Cook County prosecutors. The charge carried a possible prison term of three to seven years. He also must pay full restitution.

Prosecutors say Forsyth took the individual $250 cash fees that motorists paid and confiscated 260 receipts. The thefts were discovered in August 2016. They started in April 2008. Prosecutors say Forsyth told investigators he took the cash to cover gambling losses.

Before he was sentenced Forsyth said “to everyone, I apologize.”
