SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Tooele County Attorney determined two Salt Lake City police officers were legally justified in using deadly force when they exchanged gunfire with an armed man following a car chase.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Lt. Craig Gleason and Officer Moeilealoalo Tafisi each fired their weapons at 18-year-old Roman Jade Carrillo following a chase in May.

Tooele County Attorney Scott Broadhead’s Sept. 19 report, which was obtained Monday by The Salt Lake Tribune, says Carrillo died from a bullet he fired into his own head.

The report says Gleason says he saw Carrillo sitting with his rifle muzzle against his head. Gleason later heard a pop and Carrillo collapsed.

The report says a witness confirmed Gleason’s account to where Carrillo put a bandana over his face and lifted the rifle.
