ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Uber is expanding a carpooling option offered in the Washington, D.C., region into the Maryland suburbs.
The Washington Post reported Monday (http://wapo.st/2gDNQ27 ) that Uber Commute is expanding into Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. The Commute feature launched earlier this year in the District of Columbia and northern Virginia suburbs.
Uber Commute works a little differently that the standard ride-hailing service. Under Uber Commute, a driver signs up to pick up additional passengers as carpoolers. The passenger pays less than a standard Uber fare - perhaps $5 or $10 a ride - and drivers receive a small fee designed to help cover the cost of their commute.
Uber says the service allows for more efficient use of high-occupancy vehicle lanes.
