ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Authorities say a man died after fleeing police officers in his car, stopping on a Mississippi River bridge in St. Paul and jumping over a railing.

The incident happened Thursday night after police tried to stop the driver for several traffic violations. The man initially stopped but sped away before an officer could talk to him.

Authorities say West St. Paul and South St. Paul police were involved in a “relatively short and brief low-speed” pursuit. While driving over the Lafayette Bridge in St. Paul, he suddenly stopped on the shoulder, got out and jumped over the east railing.

The driver landed in a grassy area between the river and a road. He died at the scene.

The Ramsey County medical examiner’s office will determine a cause of death.
