NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Downpours flooded numerous streets around New Orleans, and an official says two drainage pumps in one neighborhood went offline.
The interim head of the city’s Sewerage and Water Board, Paul Rainwater, told WWL-TV that 109 of the city’s 120 drainage pumps were working properly. But he says two pumps in the Gentilly neighborhood stopped working during Monday’s downpours.
The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings in New Orleans and suburban St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes.
A city-run Twitter account posted numerous flood reports and early school closings.
The weather service said up to 3 inches of rain had fallen by Monday afternoon, and another 1 to 3 inches were possible.
Problems with some of the pumps that clear rainwater from New Orleans contributed to widespread flooding in August.
