PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Economic experts are warning against sweeping promises made by the investors of another proposed Maine casino.
The Portland Press Herald reports experts remain skeptical of claims the proposed York County casino will bring more than 2,000 jobs and $45 million in annual tax revenue to the area.
Rachel Volberg says casino development projects use “rosy projections” to tout possible job and tax revenue additions. Volberg says the estimates fail to account for detailed data and can be manipulated.
Backers of the then-proposed Oxford Casino in 2010 pointed to an economic study which predicted the business would see $60 million in annual tax income. The casino has produced about $32 million annually.
A referendum vote on the York County casino has been scheduled for November.
