PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s unemployment rate has ticked down to 4.2 percent.

The state Department of Labor and Training said Thursday that the jobless rate for September was down one-tenth of a percentage point from the August rate.

The September 2016 rate was 5.3 percent.

The national unemployment rate was also 4.2 percent in September, which is down two-tenths of a percentage point.

Rhode Island lost 3,700 jobs from the revised August employment level of 498,800. Employment in the accommodation and food services sector fell sharply.

The state says the number of jobs in Rhode Island overall is up 3,800 since the start of the year and up 4,500 from a year ago.

The labor force totaled 555,000 in September, which is down 1,300 from August and up 2,800 from September 2016.
