President Trump’s eldest daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump said she went through a punk phase as a preteen and uncontrollably sobbed for 24 hours after Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide, according to her mother’s new memoir.
“During my punk phase in the nineties, I was really into Nirvana,” Ms. Trump wrote in an excerpt published in “Raising Trump,” mother Ivana Trump’s newly published memoir.
“My wardrobe consisted of ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts,” Ms. Trump wrote. “One day after school, I dyed my hair blue. Mom wasn’t a fan of this decision. She took one look at me and immediately went out to the nearest drugstore to buy a $10 box of Nice’n Easy. That night, she forced me to dye my hair back to blond. The color she picked out was actually three shades lighter than my natural color… and I have never looked back!”
She continued: “It wasn’t too long after this that Kurt Cobain, the singer, songwriter and guitarist for Nirvana, committed suicide. It was a shock and I was distraught. Mom had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, and she sympathized only so much. After twenty-four hours of my crying inconsolably in my room, alone—major melodrama—Mom had to pull me out of there to go down to dinner.”
Ms. Trump was born in Oct. 1981, making her 12 when Cobain committed suicide in April 1994. He was 27.
Not much is publicly known about Ms. Trump’s current musical tastes, but a review of her Twitter profile suggests she prefers pop nowadays over punk and grunge. Ms. Trump’s Twitter account followed less than 1,000 other users as of Wednesday afternoon, including accounts associated with only a handful of performing artists and musical groups, the likes of which are nothing like Nirvana, to say the least.
Ms. Trump’s Twitter profile currently follows the accounts of pop singers including Katy Petty, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber, as well as country artist Trace Adkins and rappers Lil Jon and Eminem, among others, but no accounts associated with Nirvana or its surviving members.
Ms. Trump also has a soft spot for the groups Counting Crows and Maroon 5, according to her Twitter profile. Twitter lists the accounts each user follows in reverse chronological order, and review of Ms. Trump’s profile suggests she began following the Counting Crows and Maroon 5 accounts before following accounts associated with either her father or her older brother, Donald Trump Jr. She attended a birthday party in 2007 with Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz, according to the New York Post report.
