AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - An LBTQ advocacy group is seeking information about the conditions of a Maine youth center in the wake of a transgender teen’s suicide at the facility.
The Portland Press Herald reports GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, or GLAD, filed a Freedom of Access Act request on Tuesday with the Maine Department of Corrections.
GLAD’s request follows the 2016 hanging death of 16-year-old Charles Maisie Knowles while staying in the girls’ unit at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Long Creek is a state-run correctional facility for juvenile offenders.
GLAD senior attorney Patience Crozier says the report will show the condition LGBTQ youth are living in at the facility.
Corrections Commissioner Joseph Fitzpatrick says the department doesn’t have a problem with making the report public.
