SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Republican John Curtis has not surpassed Democrat Kathryn Allen’s fundraising in the race for Utah’s vacant U.S. House seat, but he did raise nearly three times more than her during the last three months.
While Allen made waves in state when she raised more than $500,000 earlier this year to challenge then-Congressman Jason Chaffetz, her fundraising has since slowed with the Republican’s resignation this summer, The Salt Lake Tribune reported .
Allen raised $112,000 since July while Curtis amassed $302,800 at the same time, according to the most recent financial filings. Since Allen launched her campaign in March, she has raised $792,000, which is about $118,000 more than Curtis’ total. Allen has also spent more and has $89,500 in cash on hand - less than Curtis’ $115,900.
“Obviously, it slowed down quite a bit,” said Emily Bingham, Allen’s campaign manager. “It was difficult to re-engage donors once Jason Chaffetz wasn’t the candidate anymore. But I think we did a good job reaching out and getting support from different people this time.”
Danny Laub, a spokesman for Curtis, said the Provo mayor’s campaign is gaining traction. “(His) message of taking conservative reform and getting things done to Washington is resonating with voters across the district,” Laub said.
Utah’s 3rd Congressional District has been reliably Republican in the past.
