‘Spaceballs’ sequel possibility a ‘ticking clock,’ says star Bill Pullman

It’s been 30 years since the “Star Trek/Star Wars” parody “Spaceballs” hit the screen, with writer-director Mel Brooks sending up every facet of outer space serial adventure in a self-knowing film featuring Dark Helmet, Princess Vespa and Mr. Brooks himself playing both the sage guru Yogurt and bumbling politician extraordinaire President Skroob.

Rumors have swirled for years of a sequel — which gained traction this summer when Mr. Brooks told an audience in Newark, New Jersey, that MGM was interested given the success of the new “Star Wars” films.

Bill Pullman, who played the Han Solo/Luke Skywalker mashup character Lone Star in “Spaceballs,” laughed when asked by The Washington Times if that sequel would finally get off the launchpad.

“It’s the ticking clock of all time, isn’t it?” Mr. Pullman, who co-starred in the recent Billie Jean King biopic “Battle of the Sexes,” told The Times.

“I’m just so glad I’m not in my nineties and being in Mel Brooks skit with the number of people who are waiting for him to do ’Spaceballs: The Sequel,’” Mr. Pullman jested.

Mr. Pullman ventured that Mr. Brooks has likely given the sequel a “great deal of thought,” but time is not on anyone’s side. (Mr. Pullman is 63, Mr. Brooks 91.)

“He’s still performing live in Vegas. He’s got a lot of energy,” Mr. Pullman said of his onetime director. “So we’re in that critical phase here with that possibility.”
