PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s largest city is moving forward with a tech project that will upgrade the city’s streetlights with Wi-Fi and better lighting.
The Portland Press Herald reports the City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve the $8.5 million project. Portland will purchase lampposts from Central Maine Power Co. and outfit them with energy efficient LED lights and Wi-Fi technology.
City Councilor Justin Costa says the lamppost project will enable Portland to save $10 million over the next decade. TEN Connected Solutions has been selected to convert the lampposts.
Portland is part of a growing group of cities that have adopted “smart cities” technologies. Many cities have installed lampposts that can provide information to citizens and analyze traffic.
