The latest contender for Maine’s next governor is the GOP Senate president who’s often been at odds with Republican Gov. Paul LePage.
Senate President Mike Thibodeau said Tuesday he plans to join the GOP primary race. He’ll face fellow Republicans such as Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason, former state Health and Human Services commissioner Mary Mayhew and House Minority Leader Ken Fredette.
Term limits prevent LePage from running again in 2018. So far, 17 Democrat, Republican and third-party candidates have registered to run for governor.
Former independent gubernatorial candidate and auto-body repair chain owner Shawn Moody has said that he registered as a Republican and could run for governor.
Thibodeau is stressing that the state needs to come together to rein in the growth of government and create jobs.
