ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) - Frontier Airlines has inaugurated service to Southern California’s Ontario International Airport.

The Press-Enterprise reports the long-vacant east end of Terminal 2 was brimming with passengers waiting to board a Frontier flight to Austin, Texas, on Thursday.

The airline has service from Ontario to Denver and San Antonio, Texas, with flights to Chicago planned for next year.

The shuttered portion of the terminal was a symbol of struggles at the airport 40 miles east of Los Angeles, which had experienced double-digit declines in passenger traffic between 2007 and 2010.

The airport returned to local control a year ago after being owned by the city of Los Angeles for decades.
