SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California’s attorney general is fighting a judge’s decision to change the official ballot description of a proposed gas tax repeal.
Attorney General Xavier Becerra (HAH’-vee-air Bah-SEHR’-ah) appealed last week after a Sacramento County judge rewrote what he considered a flawed and misleading description.
The ballot measure would repeal recent gas tax hikes. Becerra gave it a less specific title, indicating it would eliminate transportation funding by repealing revenues.
Assemblyman Travis Allen, a Republican candidate for governor, sued over the language.
The judge ruled that Becerra’s title for the measure would confuse voters and changed it to explicitly mention a gas tax repeal.
Becerra wants his language to stay.
The wording would appear on the ballot if the measure qualifies for the November 2018 election.
