SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - After a worker at a smelter outside Salt Lake City died from exposure to sulfur dioxide, the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Division is launching an investigation.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Rio Tinto Kennecott officials say 64-year-old Albert Lozano died Tuesday after he and another employee were exposed to sulfur dioxide gases while working on Sunday.
Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett says the company’s emergency response team treated Lozano onsite, and he was transferred to a hospital. The second employee’s injuries are not considered life threatening.
Bennett says the company shut down all of its facilities in the state for an hour “to talk about safety and to make sure our people are physically and emotionally ready to return to work.”
The smelter in Magna, Utah, has remained closed.
