SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Police have identified the Spokane officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man Oct. 4 outside a Wal-Mart store.

The Spokesman-Review reports police said Thursday that officers Ryan Smith and Darrel Quarles shot and killed 34-year-old Chad Cochell after he refused to exit a Ford Explorer that had been violently stolen Oct. 2.

Police have remained quiet on details of that theft, only saying that a person was hospitalized with at least two gunshot wounds from the carjacking.

Police say Sgt. Brian Eckersley was also at the scene of the Oct. 4 shooting and did not fire his weapon but blocked Cochell from leaving the parking lot.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cochell died from rifle and shotgun wounds to his chest and upper extremities. Police say he was armed at the time of the shooting.

The Spokane Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
