SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A driver charged with hitting a woman and her 10-year-old twin daughters as they were crossing a street during crowded Halloween festivities in Salem has pleaded guilty to drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
The Salem News reports that 53-year-old Dexter Mitchell could still withdraw his plea if he rejects the judge’s proposed sentence, which would put him behind bars for nine months.
Police say Mitchell drove off after hitting the family on the night before Halloween last year. They say he returned to the scene after disposing of beer cans in his vehicle.
The woman and her daughters suffered serious injuries.
Mitchell’s lawyer says his client is remorseful.
Salem, site of the 17th-century witch trials, draws tens of thousands of visitors on Halloween weekend.
