OPINION:
Count on death and taxes — and the ability of Sen. Chuck Schumer to take cheap partisan potshots at the president, wherever and whenever possible.
Here’s the latest, in the New York Democrat’s tirades against this White House, this president, this administration’s warning that Puerto Rico cannot expect taxpayer aid to last “forever” — a remark that’s simply common sense, not punitive.
Schumer, being Schumer, jumped for the political advantage, though.
The good senator tweeted: “FEMA needs to stay until the job is done and right now, it’s not even close to done.”
And he also tweeted: “Why do you [Trump] continue to treat Puerto Ricans differently than other Americans when it comes to natural disasters?”
What a hack.
All that, because Trump tweeted: “We cannot keep [the Federal Emergency Management Agency], the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!”
What’s wrong with that?
Nothing. But Schumer’s taking a crisis and spinning it to his advantage, using it to score cheap political points.
Note to Schumer and Democrats of his ilk: FEMA isn’t a bottomless pit. Sooner or later, budgets must be met. Money does not grow on trees.
