Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told a California crowd Wednesday that his goal is to have a global mass of humanity — one billion strong — that embraces virtual reality.
Social media giant Facebook has over 2 billion regular users, but its founder envisions a world where at least half of them embrace his foray into virtual reality technology known as Oculus Go. Mr. Zuckerberg arrived at the San Jose Convention Center this week to lay out his plans to make it happen.
“We are setting a goal. We want to get a billion people in virtual reality,” he told a crowd, the technology website Venture Beat reported. “Why put a computer in your pocket when most people want a phone for text messages? Why do virtual reality when most people want to watch on a 2D screen? The future is built by the people who believe it can be better.”
The billionaire said Oculus Go, a wireless VR headset, will be available next year for roughly $200.
“We all have limits to our reality, and opening up more of those experiences to all of us is not isolating,” he said. “It is freeing.”
