HONOLULU (AP) - The Latest on a motion that says a former Honolulu police chief and his wife can’t afford to pay attorneys to defend them in a corruption case (all times local):
11:46 p.m.
A judge is asking a former Honolulu police chief and his wife, a city prosecutor placed on unpaid leave, to provide financial details about whey they can’t afford to hire lawyers to defend them in a corruption case.
Lawyers who have been representing Louis and Katherine Kealoha say the couple can no longer afford to fund a defense. They’re accused of framing a relative in an attempt to discredit him in a financial dispute. U.S. prosecutors say Katherine Kealoha bilked banks, relatives and two children whose trusts she oversaw to fund the couple’s lavish lifestyle, including payments for a Maserati and a Mercedes Benz.
U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright set a hearing for Thursday to examine whether the Kealohas qualify for court-appointed counsel. The Kealohas must detail their assets to the judge before the hearing.
Their current lawyers suggest there are no local attorneys who are willing or able to defend the Kealohas.
