House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said Wednesday he understands Democrats’ enthusiasm in the wake of this week’s elections, saying the GOP would have been spinning results the same way if they’d emerged victorious.
But he said the message he took from the election was that Republicans in Washington have yet to deliver on President Trump’s agenda, and they need to do so.
“What people want to know and see is that this Donald Trump presidency and this Republican Congress makes a positive difference in my life,” Mr. Ryan said on the “Brian Kilmeade Show.”
When Mr. Kilmeade asked if the GOP now reverts back to George W. Bush-style issues, Mr. Ryan said not a chance.
“We already made that choice. We’re with Trump,” he said. “We merged our agendas. We ran with Donald Trump.”
Mr. Ryan also dismissed Democratic leaders’ attacks on the GOP tax plan, saying suburban families who abandoned the GOP on Tuesday will end up benefiting from the Republican tax-cut bill, even if they lose breaks such as the state and local income tax deduction.
