Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is threatening to sue the NFL and its owners if they go forward with commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract extension.
According to the New York Times, Jones has hired David Boies — a lawyer who represented Al Gore in the 2000 election and more recently, Harvey Weinstein — to look into filing a lawsuit.
Jones, according to ESPN and the New York Times, is upset over how Goodell has handled recent NFL controversies, including the disciplinary process of Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott. Goodell handed down a six-game suspension in the offseason, which is being challenged in the court system.
Over the last month, NFL owners have made progress on extending Goodell’s contract, but Jones has inserted himself into the process. NFL owners removed Jones as an ad hoc member from a six-man committee deciding Goodell’s contract after they found out he had hired Boies.
According to the New York Times, Jones threatened to sue the league on Friday if the committee did not stop its plans to extend Goodell.
Jones has sued the NFL before, filing an antitrust suit preventing teams in the 1990s from selling separate sponsorships apart from the league. The two parties later settled.
