Reacting to Sunday’s mass shooting in Texas, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Monday that gun control should be looked at as a public safety and a public health issue.

“Too often, we get caught up in political rhetoric, Second Amendment rights, NRA stuff,” Kerr said. “We have to look at this as it having nothing to do with partisanship, political parties. It’s got to to be a public safety issue, a public heath issue.”

Kerr then cited an article he recently read, comparing the issue to the automobile industry in the 1950s. He said people died in car crashes nine or 10 times more back then, but safety measures, speed limits and regulations helped prevent further damage.

Kerr also blamed the National Rifle Association.

“Let’s do the sensible thing,” Kerr said. “But our government has to lead the way and they just can’t cave into the NRA just because the NRA wants to make money. They have to put people’s safety and health over the interest of the gun lobby and the gun industry. … It’s disgusting and a shame.”

On Sunday, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich cut short his post-game press conference, saying talking about basketball was “pretty meaningless” after the mass shooting.

Kerr also gave his condolences to the victims.
