IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The City Council in Iowa City is discussing a proposal that would limit rental properties.
KWWL-TV reports council members on Monday night discussed a proposed regulation that would cap the percentage of rental properties in neighborhoods at 40 percent.
Iowa City Housing Inspector Stan Laverman says the goal of the proposed ordinance would be to ensure balance in neighborhoods and stop a trend of turning older homes into rental properties.
Laverman says neighborhoods with a high percentage of rentals typically have a higher number of nuisance complaints.
The proposal also would require more requirements on landlords, including interconnected smoke alarms and deadbolt locks for all units.
The council will take up the issue again later.
