President Trump reflected on the one-year anniversary of his election Tuesday, saying it was “a victory that made a lot of people very happy.”

“It was great victory,” the president said at a news conference in Seoul, South Korea. “It is one year, as of tomorrow [Wednesday], that we had our election victory. And our country is doing very well from the standpoint of the economy.”

He noted the record-breaking stock market surge, and unemployment at a 17-year low.

“We’ve created trillions and trillions of dollars of value for our country. So we’re very happy,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump is in the midst of a five-nation trip to Asia in which he’s pressing for more favorable trade deals. He indicated success Tuesday in negotiations with South Korean President Moon Jae-in toward reducing the U.S. trade deficit.

“Trade is something that we always talk; it’s one of my favorite subjects,” he told Mr. Moon. “I guess it’s one of the reasons that I had that great, successful victory last year. Through our representatives, the amount of equipment and things that you’ll be ordering from the United States will be very substantially increased and therefore we’ll be bringing the trade deficit way down, which is very important to our people.”

Mr. Moon told Mr. Trump that the rise on Wall Street is also lifting South Korea’s stock market.

“You are already making great progress on making America great again, as you have promised on the campaign trail,” Mr. Moon said.
