WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The city of Wilmington has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle claims that five firefighters experienced race-based discrimination under the department’s former fire chief.
The city announced Friday that it had reached the settlement. Under the deal, the firefighters will each receive $15,000 and will drop all claims against former Chief Anthony Goode.
WDEL-AM reports the firefighters, who are white, claimed they were repeatedly harassed by Goode, who’s black.
Goode was demoted earlier this year in a move that allowed to him to work the additional months required to collect his full pension. Wilmington’s human resources department says Goode is no longer employed by the city.
Reached Friday by The News Journal , Goode said he was unaware of the settlement and declined to comment.
