OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - The St. Landry Parish School Board has voted to give employees a $1,000 bonus check next month.

The board’s finance committee last week approved Superintendent Patrick Jenkins’ recommendation to give full-time workers a $750 supplement in addition to their regular paycheck as a Christmas bonus.

The Daily World reports committee members argued the employees should get more money and promised to reconsider the matter at Thursday’s meeting. Board member James Hayeson asked the board to give employees a $1,000 supplement with another $250 granted to substitute workers. His motion passed.

No vote was taken on the $750 proposal.

Finance Director Tressa Miller says the bonus will cost $2.4 million and be paid from an employee salary and benefit fund that contained $5.86 million on Aug. 31.
