BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A company rejected as Southern University’s medical marijuana supplier has sued the school to get public records related to its selection process.
Med Louisiana LLC of Lafayette contends the university is taking too long to provide records.
It asked Oct. 20 for the two other finalists’ applications and for copies of emails, text messages, and records of calls by and between members of Southern’s board of supervisors, the school and employees of the school’s purchasing department.
Southern told The Advocate in a statement Wednesday that several unsuccessful applicants made public records requests, and Southern must black out a lot of personal information before releasing the documents.
Attorney Jill Craft said Thursday that she filed the lawsuit Nov. 20 in state district court in Baton Rouge.
Med Louisiana was among seven applicants and three finalists.
It was also the company recommended by Southern’s review committee, which cited the firm’s financial strength, cultivation expertise and proprietary patents.
Med Louisiana guaranteed Southern less than $2 million but offered Southern a greater share of future profits. Some board members questioned the wisdom of betting on profits that might never materialize.
Lafayette-based Advanced Biomedics offered a $6 million guarantee over five years, and won the contract.
