House Speaker Paul D. Ryan on Thursday invited President Trump to deliver the next state of the Union address, a traditional gesture made by the speaker to the president each year.
“Today, we are in the midst of a historic effort to provide relief to hardworking taxpayers, grow our economy, and rebuild our military for the 21st century,” said the letter sent to Mr. Trump.
“Looking ahead, the new year will bring an opportunity to take account of the progress we have made but also lay out the work that still remains to be done on behalf of the American people. In that spirit, it is my honor to invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress,” Mr. Ryan wrote.
The White House said the president was pleased to accept the invitation.
The date is set for Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018. It will be Mr. Trump’s first State of the Union address since taking office, even though he had addressed the joint chambers of Congress shortly after his inauguration.
