PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh’s already booming health care sector is getting a $2 billion shot in the arm.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center announced Friday it’s building three new specialty hospitals over the next few years, doubling the number of specialty hospitals it already operates in the city.
The advanced new facilities will focus on cancer, cardiac care and organ transplantation, and vision.
The hospitals will lead to a “dramatic advance in the way UPMC delivers the highest quality health care in the region,” UPMC President and CEO Jeffrey Romoff said.
The new facilities, to be located on existing UPMC campuses in Pittsburgh, will be:
-UPMC Vision and Rehabilitation Hospital, expected to open in 2020 on the UPMC Mercy campus.
-UPMC Hillman Cancer Hospital, scheduled to open in 2022 at UPMC Shadyside.
-UPMC Heart and Transplant Hospital, at UPMC Presbyterian in the city’s Oakland neighborhood. There’s no timetable for when it will open.
The health system will consolidate patient care in the new facilities, and the building boom will not create any additional beds.
UPMC also announced a partnership with Microsoft and its Azure cloud computing service that, Romoff said, will “apply technology in ways that will transform what today is often a disjointed and needlessly complex experience for patients and clinicians.”
UMPC owns 39 hospitals and is one of Pennsylvania’s largest private employers, with 80,000 employees and $17 billion in revenues.
